Abiy Ahmed sworn in as Prime Minister for a second five-year term
The current Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, was sworn in by the Ethiopian Parliament on Monday, 4 October, for a five-year term, AP reported.
The 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner (for pursuing peace with neighbouring country Eritrea) had won an easy victory in the general elections that were held in June.
The civil war between the Ethiopian federal government's troops and the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) erupted almost a year ago.
Millions have been forced to flee their homes, thousands have already died and the UN has warned of the devastating effects of famine in Tigray as a consequence of Abiy Ahmed's blockade of humanitarian aid into Tigray region, Reuters reported.
Last week, on Thursday, 30 September, Ahmed's administration came under fire from the UN, the US and some EU states after it asked seven UN officials to leave Ethiopia after accusing them of supporting the TPLF, the report added.

Udaan looks to secure ₹4k crore to fund growth
B2B marketplace Udaan is set to raise as much as ₹4,000 crore to fund expansion as more retailers and wholesalers embrace digital commerce, two people directly aware of the plan said.
Udaan is likely to close the funding round in the next few weeks, the people cited above said, requesting anonymity.
The fundraising will value the startup at $4.5-5 billion, one of the two people said. “There is an unprecedented demand to add capacity as customers are migrating to e-commerce platforms,” the person said. This will be the largest fundraising by the five-year-old Udaan, which has hired Goldman Sachs to manage the process, the person said.
Udaan currently has more than 3 million retailers and 25,000 sellers on its platform, and plans to “double sales volume within a year” by tying up with more sellers, expanding its logistics network and employing technology to grow its business in the pharmaceutical and packaged consumer goods space that has seen a surge in demand.
Experts said digitization of the retail and wholesale supply chains is likely to outlast the crisis and trigger faster expansion of both customer and business-centric e-commerce platforms.

Russia test-fires Tsirkon (Zircon) hypersonic cruise missile from a submarine for the first time
The country's defence ministry, which originally test fired the weapon - also known as Zircon - from a warship in July, said the second test, deployed in the Barents Sea, had hit its chosen target.
Low-quality video footage released by the ministry showed the missile shooting up from the submarine, lighting up the night sky and illuminating the water's surface.
"The test firing of the Tsirkon missile from a nuclear submarine was deemed successful," the ministry said.
Some western experts have questioned how advanced Russia's new generation of weapons are, but recognised the combination of speed manoeuvrability and altitude makes them difficult to track and intercept.
Footage released in July of the country's new advanced S-500 surface-to-air missile system appeared to have been deliberately blurred, making it harder to examine.
Tsirkon is intended to arm Russian cruisers, frigates and submarines.
