Satya Nadella: New CEO of Microsoft

  • Hyderabad native Satya Nadella (46) is the new CEO of Internet giant Microsoft.

  • After a selection period that saw numerous outside candidates drop off, the Microsoft Board signalled its intention to focus on innovation by selecting the man credited with developing the company's cloud computing and Bing search engine businesses.

  • While some have argued that Microsoft was slow to respond to the shift towards cloud computing, conceding a lead to others such as Google and Amazon, Mr. Nadella underscored his intention to reverse this saying, “Our industry does not respect tradition – it only respects innovation.”

  • Mr. Nadella who holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Manipal University, a master’s in computer science from the University of Wisconsin, and an MBA from the University of Chicago, joined Microsoft in 1992.

Rationalising reserve prices

  • Rationalisation of spectrum reserve prices has helped the government get Rs.40,000 crore of bids on the opening day of the ongoing auction.

  • People are now expected to realise how irrational it was at that point in time for media and everybody to shout that the government is losing revenue,according to Mr. Sibal said, while referring to lowering of the base price compared to 2013 auction, which did not evoke much response from mobile firms.

  • The architectural vision of ‘GI Cloud’ encompasses a set of discrete cloud computing environments spread across multiple locations, built on existing or augmented infrastructure, following a set of common protocols, guidelines and standards issued by the Centre.

  • Some of its features include self-service portal, multiple cloud solutions, secured VPN access and multi location cloud.

Output of India's pvt sector

  • India’s private sector output contracted for the seventh consecutive month in January as services sector output remained weak amid tough economic conditions.

  • The fall was largely on account of drop in services sector output unlike the manufacturing sector which had seen acceleration in production growth in January.

  • Service providers in the country reported falling new business orders for the seventh month running in January, amid increased competition for new work, deteriorating confidence among clients and weaker underlying demand.

  • Retail or CPI inflation in December moderated to a three-month low of 9.87 per cent, while the wholesale or WPI was at 5-month low of 6.16 per cent during the month.

68th Santosh Trophy

  • Punjab drubbed Uttar Pradesh 4-0 in their final group B in the North Zone Qualifiers at the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi.

  • Gurpreet Singh (38'), Amardip Singh (73'), Vijay Kumar (74') and Ranjit Singh (84') scored to help their side to top the group with nine points. In the earlier rounds, Punjab had beaten Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir by 2-1 and 1-0 scorelines respectively.

  • Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh meanwhile shared the spoils (0-0) in another final matchday encounter in group B. Himachal managed to pick their first point in the tournament while J&K finished off with four points from three matches each.

Virat Kohli : 4th in ICC Twenty20 rankings

  • Virat Kohli slipped a rung but was still the best-placed Indian batsman at fourth in the latest ICC Twenty20 rankings issued.
  • He was followed by Suresh Raina at fifth and Yuvraj Singh at sixth. Both these batsmen gained a position to move up the list.
  • However, no Indian found a place in the top-10 of bowlers' list, while Yuvraj was steady at third in the all-rounders' chart.
  • New Zealand's Brendon McCullum was in the top spot.
