Privatisation of Airports

  • Uncertainty gripped privatisation of six major airports, including those of Chennai and Kolkata, as the bidding has been deferred again, till the middle of March.

  • This is the third time the process has been postponed midway, putting a question mark over the exercise, which started in November last.

  • The process was hit by questions over the drafting of the concession agreement, which would have to be signed by the selected private company.

  • The due date for the Request for Qualification had earlier been pushed from January-end to February 17 for the Chennai, Kolkata, Lucknow and Guwahati airports, and to February 12 for Jaipur and Ahmedabad. These dates have been pushed further to March 17.

  • Now, it seems the bids will be opened only after the general election as the model code of conduct is likely to come into force by early March.

Gold, silver gains

  • Gold and silver prices extended gains for the third straight day in the national capital on sustained buying by stockists for the wedding season and a firming global trend.
  • While gold inched up by Rs 5 to Rs 30,985 per 10 grams, silver spurted by Rs 1,000 to Rs 47,000 per kg.
  • Traders said sustained buying by stockists for the ongoing wedding season along with a firming global trend mainly kept gold and silver prices higher for the third straight day.
  • Gold in New York, which normally sets the price trend on the domestic front, rose by 1.4 per cent to $1,318.60 an ounce and silver jumped 5 per cent to $21.42 an ounce.
  • On the domestic front, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity added Rs 5 each to Rs 30,985 and Rs 30,785 per 10 grams, respectively. It had gained Rs 230 in last two trades.
  • Silver gained Rs 1,060 in the previous two sessions.It flared up by Rs 1,000 to Rs 88,000 for buying and Rs 89,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

PGTI Eagleburg Open

  • Defending champion Anirban Lahiri gave a spirited charge on the final round with a card of four under 68 but Sri Lankan golfer Mithun Perera came up with a resolute one-under 71 to win the PGTI Eagleburg Open, his second title in two weeks.

  • Perera signed off with a tournament total of 22-under 266 to register a three-shot win despite Lahiri’s brilliant show.

  • Local favourite Lahiri secured runner-up position after ending up with a total of 19-under 269.

Basketball Hall of Fame

  • Former NBA Commissioner David Stern has been elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, just two weeks after retiring from a successful 30-year reign.
  • The Hall of Fame Committee has acknowledged Stern’s contributions to the NBA during his three decades as chief.
