Appraisal of 12th Plan to help govt judge

  • The mid-term appraisal of the 12th plan of the Planning Commission for which preparatory work has started will be a good opportunity for the government to judge the work done so far, according to Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia .
  • He said the mid-term appraisal of 12th Plan (2012-17) will be done by the end of 2014.
  • Mr. Ahluwalia also said more is needed to be done in the area of Public-private partnership (PPP) in healthcare segment.

India Inc forms companies to fund politics without taxes

  • Companies have already begun to work out their exposure to political parties in the 2014 general elections.
  • Two corporate groups, Vedanta and Mahindra, have been first off the block to set up their electoral trust companies. The two entities — Janhit Electoral Trust and Mahindra Electoral Trust Company — were registered in August and December 2013, respectively, to make political donations, data bank of the ministry of corporate affairs shows.
  • While Janhit Electoral Trust was set up on August 8 in Tamil Nadu by the Vedanta Group, Mahindra Electoral Trust Company was set up as recent as December 9 in Maharshtra by Mahindra & Mahindra, as per the ministry.
  • Many other big corporate houses, including the Tata Group, are in the fray to register as electoral trust company to avail of the tax benefits for political donations. The companies are disbanding their existing trusts to form these new companies.
  • These trusts will have to disclose the details of the amount contributed by them to any political party during the financial year.

At 111, golfer Lahiri now highest-ranked Indian

  • Bangalore golfer Anirban Lahiri became the highest-ranked Indian golfer in the world, at 111, following his tied-fourth finish at the $1 million Thailand Golf Championships. His Bangkok heroics meant the Vijay Divecha-coached golfer rose 21 places in the world and a notch higher to be fifth in the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

  • Lahiri is now ahead of the likes of 2006 Doha Asian Games silver medallist Gaganjeet Bhullar, Asian Tour honorary member Jeev Milkha Singh, three-time Indian Open champion Jyoti Randhawa and two-time European Challenge Tour winner Shiv Kapur.

  • Consistency has paid for Lahiri, who recorded six top-10 finishes in 2013 besides his SAIL-SBI Open triumph at the Delhi Golf Club.

Delhi Waveriders

  • Actor-turned-producer John Abraham has been signed by Hockey India League (HIL) franchise Delhi Waveriders as its co-owner recently.
  • The franchise also appointed former national hockey coach Cedric D'Souza as their new coach for the second edition of the league which starts next month.
  • The Hockey India League is scheduled from January 25 to February 15, with six teams competing against each other.
