Vice Admiral S.N. SN Ghormade became the new Vice Chief of the Navy
- Vice Admiral SN Ghormade, a navigation and direction specialist, assumed charge as the new Vice Chief of the Navy.
- Admiral Ghormade has had extensive operational tenures onboard frontline warships of the Navy that included commanding guided missile frigate INS Brahmaputra, submarine rescue vessel INS Nireekshak and minesweeper INS Alleppey.
- He succeeded Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar who retired after 39 years of service.
- The Flag Officer was holding the tri-service appointment of deputy chief (operations and training) at the headquarters of the Integrated Defence Staff prior to taking over as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.

Italy hosts G20 culture ministers meeting
- The first G20 Culture Ministers’ Meeting will be held in Rome on 29 and 30 July, an unprecedented and historic choice by the Italian G20 Presidency.
- It is a strategic choice connected with the importance of the cultural sector in Italy and with the need for a shared assessment of the impacts of the global pandemic. Culture is, in fact, a strong tool to ensure a swift recovery, both with regard to the values which will underpin the post-pandemic regeneration and to the role of the creative sectors of the economy in creating new jobs and opportunities. Culture represents a crucial engine for sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth, fitting coherently into the agenda of the Italian G20 Presidency.
- Along with the Ministers of the G20 and of invited countries, participants include the main international organizations active in this sector, such as UNESCO, OECD, the Council of Europe, the Union for the Mediterranean, international organizations of the cultural sector such as ICCROM, ICOM and ICOMOS, and major actors in the fight against crimes related to cultural heritage, such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Interpol and the World Customs Organization (WCO).

Central government approved two more strategic oil reserves
- Under the first phase of the Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) programme, the Government of India through its special purpose vehicle, the Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Limited (ISPRL), has set up petroleum storage facilities with a total capacity of 5.33 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) at 3 locations, namely (i) Visakhapatnam (1.33 MMT), (ii) Mangaluru (1.5 MMT) and (iii) Padur (2.5 MMT), and all the storage facilities have been filled with crude oil.
- The petroleum reserves established under Phase-I are strategic in nature and the crude oil stored in these reserves will be used during oil shortage events, as and when declared so by the Government of India.
- Under the second phase of the Petroleum Reserves programme, the government has approved the setting up of two additional commercial-cum-strategic facilities with a total storage capacity of 6.5 MMT underground storage at Chandikhol (4 MMT) and Padur (2.5 MMT) in July 2021, on PPP Mode.
- The request for proposal for building these storage facilities is under finalisation. An amount of Rs 210 crore was allocated in the budget for the financial year 2020-21 under Phase II for land acquisition, and the same has been disbursed to ISPRL, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas RameswarTeli said.

Olympic: Boxer Pooja Rani crashed out of competition after losing in the quarterfinals
- Pooja Rani crashed out of Tokyo Olympics after a 0-5 loss to China’s Li Qian in the quarterfinals of women’s 69-kg category. The Indian boxer, although started on a positive note, failed to land scoring punches as the Rio Olympics bronze medallist played some smart boxing to outscore her Indian opponent.
- • However, Round 2 and 3 belonged to Li Qian who dominated Pooja Rani with some brilliant scoring punches to win on a unanimous decision. With that, India’s medal hopes in the 69-kg category was dashed.
