Twitter appoints Vinay Prakash as Resident Grievance Officer for India

  • Twitter has appointed Vinay Prakash as Resident Grievance Officer for India. The appointment announcement was made on the official website of Twitter.
  • Micro-blogging site added that the Resident Grievance Officer can be contacted by email on: grievance-officer-in@twitter.com.
  • Twitter on Thursday had informed the Delhi High Court that it will need eight weeks to appoint a chief compliance officer, in line with the new IT rules.
  • The company further said that it has hired a resident of India as its interim compliance officer, effective 6 July, and has communicated the development to the ministry of information technology.
  • For the past several months, Twitter has been involved in a stand-off with the Indian government over the new amendments in the country's new Information Technology laws with the micro-blogging platform losing its intermediary status and becoming liable for user-generated content.
  • The Government of India has approached the Supreme Court seeking transfer of all petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021 from various High Courts to the top court.

G20 finance ministers approve minimum 15% global corporate tax rate during two-day talks in Venice

  • G20 Finance Ministers on Saturday approved a tax reform for multinationals that aims to put an end to tax havens by introducing a global corporate tax rate of at 15 per cent.
  • The G20 finance chiefs wrapped up two days of talks in the Italian city of Venice on Saturday with the adoption of a joint communique, reported NHK World.
  • It said that the finance chiefs endorsed the action of a group of 132 countries and territories to set a minimum global corporate tax at 15 per cent. That is in a bid to end global competition to offer the lowest corporate tax.
  • And it also encourages finalizing the details of the rules by the next G20 meeting scheduled for October. Negotiations will continue with the goal of reaching a final deal by October, reported NHK World.
  • The group is mainly made up of member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, or OECD.
  • The G20 is made up of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Turkey, the UK, the US, and the EU. Spain is also invited as a permanent guest.

Union Transport Minister NitinGadkari inaugurated the country's first private Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in Nagpur

  • Minister for Road Transport and Highways NitinGadkari inaugurated the country’s first Private Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Facility plant at Nagpur.
  • At the inauguration, the union minister emphasized on the importance of alternate biofuels for diversification of agriculture towards the energy and power sector.
  • The union minister said “we have designed a policy that encourages the development of imports substitute cost-effective, pollution-free and indigenous ethanol, bio CNG, LNG and hydrogen fuels. The ministry is constantly working on different alternative fuels. We have to use the surplus in rice, corn and sugar to prevent it from going to waste.”
  • Talking about flex engines, the union minister said the decision will be taken in three months making it mandatory for automobile manufacturers particularly the four wheelers and two-wheelers to make flex engines.
  • He said several countries like USA, Canada and Brazil already have them and the cost of the vehicle remains the same whether it is petrol or a flex engine.

Paytm set to raise $268 million in pre-IPO funding

  • Paytm’s parent One97 Communications Ltd (OCL) is in talks with several investors to raise $268 million ahead of its planned public listing on the domestic exchanges by November, said three people aware of the discussions.
  • It will look to tap institutional investors and sovereign funds for the fundraise, one of the three people cited above said, requesting anonymity.
  • The pre-IPO funding round is part of OCL’s primary fundraise that will be done through a fresh issue of shares.
  • On Monday, shareholders approved at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) the plan to raise up to ₹12,000 crore through a fresh issue of shares.

ISRO plans to launch geo imaging satellite

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is getting back into launch activity fully at Sriharikota spaceport with the planned orbiting of geo imaging satellite GISAT-1 on board GSLV-F10 rocket on August 12.
  • It's going to be only the second launch of the Bengaluru-headquartered space agency in the COVID-19-hit 2021.
  • ISRO successfully launched PSLV-C51 mission on February 28 with Brazil's earth observation satellite Amazonia-1 and 18 co-passengers, including some built by students, on board.
  • The 2,268-kg GISAT-1 was originally slated to be launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, about 100 kms north of Chennai, on March 5 last year but was postponed a day before the blast-off due to technical reasons.
  • It was scheduled for March 28 this year but a "minor issue" with the satellite forced its postponement.
  • The launch was later expected in April and then in May but the campaign could not be taken up due to lockdown in parts of the country triggered by the second wave of the pandemic.
  • "We have tentatively planned the GSLV-F10 launch on August 12, at 05.43 am, subject to weather conditions", .
