Assam announces covid relief package for drivers, helpers, priests

  • Assam government will make learning history and geography mandatory in class 9 and 10 in schools.
  • The state government has also announced COVID relief package where drivers and helpers of privately operated buses will get one-time relief of Rs 10,000. The priests of the temple and head of Namghars (Vaishnavite place of worship) will get Rs 15,000 each.
  • He said, “Due to closure of inter-district movement in the last three-month long distance buses are not playing, the driver and helper are facing financial hardship. To assist them we will provide Rs 10,000 to each of them. This scheme will encompass 60,000 people.”

India's foreign exchange reserves fell by $ 2.099 billion to $ 619.365 billion

  • India's foreign exchange reserves decreased by USD 2.099 billion to stand at USD 619.365 billion for the week ended August 13 due to a fall in core currency assets and gold, RBI data showed on Friday.
  • The forex kitty had increased by USD 889 million to a lifetime high of USD 621.464 billion in the previous reporting week.
  • Foreign currency assets (FCAs), a major component of the overall reserves, decreased by USD 1.358 billion to USD 576.374 billion in the reporting week, as per the weekly data by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • Expressed in dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound and yen held in the foreign exchange reserves.

DCGI approves ZydusCadila's DNA-based vaccine ZyCoV-D for emergency use authorization

  • ZydusCadila said it got emergency use authorization for its ZyCoV-D coronavirus vaccine on Friday, becoming the first jab to be cleared for children in the 12-18 age group in India.
  • The Drugs Controller General of India’s (DCGI’s) approval of the country’s second indigenously developed vaccine will also help India speed up its immunization effort to halt the spread of the deadly virus.
  • an expert panel recommended authorizing ZydusCadila’s three-dose covid-19 vaccine for emergency use, clearing the way for the formal approval by the DCGI.
  • The vaccine from the Ahmedabad-based drugmaker is the world’s first DNA-based vaccine for covid-19 to be administered in adults as well as children aged 12 years and above.
  • The drugmaker has also evaluated a two-dose regimen for ZyCoV-D vaccine using a 3 mg dosage, and the effectiveness of the vaccine was found to be equivalent to the three-dose regimen.
