Eknath Shinde’s swipe on raids on Sanjay Raut, update on cabinet expansion

  • Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday took a swipe at his former party colleague - Sanjay Raut - hours after Raut’s home was raided amid investigation in a money laundering case, Raut, who has been a vehement critic of the BJP, said he won’t leave Team Uddhav Thackeray, underlining that the action was taken against him using “false evidence”.
  • Hours later, briefing the reporters, EknathShinde said that Raut “should not be afraid if he has not done anything wrong”. Stressing that the central probe agency was doing its work, Shinde further dismissed claims that Raut was asked to join his camp. “Just because one's scared of the ED, one shouldn't come to our party,” Shinde was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
  • Shinde’s rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray had led to the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra. The NCP-Congress-Shiv Sena combine could not survive the revolt of the Sena MLAs who had sided with Shinde.
  • Amid the investigation, Raut got fresh summons from the ED over alleged fraud in a project redevelopment. Earlier too, he had said that he had got an invite to join the rebel MLAs but he had refused.
  • As probe agency officials reached his home, he tweeted: “I swear by late Balasabheb Thackeray that I have nothing to do with any scam…Balasaheb taught us to fight..I will continue to fight for Shiv Sena.”
  • “I will not leave Shiv Sena..Even if I die, I will not surrender,” the RajyaSabha MP further said.
  • Meanwhile, Shinde on Sunday also said that his cabinet would be expanded soon, ANI reported.
  • The Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government is yet to reveal the details on portfolios ever since it was formed about three weeks ago.

Covid-hit Macau reopens beaches but bans swimming

  • Macau beachgoers were left high and dry as the Chinese gambling hub reopened two beaches but banned swimming and water sports, citing coronavirus concerns.
  • The city is gradually recovering from its most serious outbreak to date, which earlier this month led officials to shutter casinos and most businesses for nearly two weeks.
  • As temperatures reached 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday, Macau residents were allowed to "enter the beach for walks and relaxation" but officials drew a line in the sand by banning water-based activities.
  • Beachgoers must "at all times wear masks of the right specification, maintain social distancing, avoid gathering in crowds and refrain from strenuous exercise," the government said.
  • Families flocked to Macau's HacSa beach Saturday morning, with one beachgoer expressing understanding for the restrictions, public broadcaster Teledifusao de Macau reported.
  • The city on Wednesday reported no new infections for the first time since the outbreak began in mid-June, with a total of just over 1,800 cases recorded during this coronavirus wave.
  • Macau strictly enforces anti-epidemic regulations, with one wouldbe beachgoer fined 3,000 patacas ($370) last week after driving onto HacSa against regulations, according to local media.

With $208 billion in fortunes, Ambani and Adani start to face off

  • Indian billionaire MukeshAmbani and his aides ran into an unexpected dilemma when debating where to train the dealmaking lens of his empire next. Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd. was contemplating buying a foreign telecommunications giant, when word reached them that GautamAdani -- who had overtaken Ambani as Asia’s richest man a few months earlier -- was planning to bid in the first big sale of 5G airwaves in India, according to people familiar with the matter.
  • Ambani’s Reliance JioInfocomm Ltd. is the top player in India’s mobile market, while the Adani Group doesn’t even have a license to offer wireless telecommunications services. But the very idea that he might be circling ground so core to Ambani’s ambitions put the tycoon’s camp on high alert, according to the people, who asked not to be named discussing information that isn’t public.
  • One set of aides advised Ambani to pursue the overseas target and diversify beyond the Indian market, while another counseled conserving funds to fend off any challenge on the home turf, according to people familiar with the discussions.
  • Ambani, worth almost $90 billion, ultimately never bid for the foreign firm, partly, the people said, because he decided it would be more astute to retain financial firepower in case of a challenge from Adani, who has seen the world’s largest wealth gain this year -- to $118.3 billion, based on data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
  • After peacefully expanding in their respective domains for over two decades, Asia’s two richest men are increasingly treading the same ground, as Adani in particular sets his sights beyond his traditional areas of focus.
