Veteran journalist Balraj Puri passes away
- Veteran journalist Padma Bhushan Balraj Puri passed away after prolonged illness at a Government Medical College here .
- Mr. Puri was conferred the Padma Bhushan for his contribution in the fields of Literature and Education in 2005 and also the Indira Gandhi award for national integration on October 31, 2009.
- He was an author and co-author of about 40 books and approximately 1,000 articles for various dailies in India and abroad.
Mahila Bank to have 25 p.c. presence in rural areas
- From seven branches in December 2013, the Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) is now looking to cross 80 this year with new ones in Kochi, Dholpur and other places.
- It already has a presence in 23 states.
- The Bank is slowly emerging as a chief option for women to get credit on easier terms than commercial banks.
- It lends money to women who set up small businesses, beauty parlours, day care centres and home based initiatives and customers get upto Rs one crore without a credit guarantee.
Rona Fairhead set to be first chairwoman of BBC Trust
- The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Trust, the body overseeing the world famous news corporation, is set to get its first female head.
- Rona Fairhead, 53, a high-flying executive who sits on the boards of a number of blue-chip companies, announced as the prospective new chairperson of the BBC Trust.
- Sajid Javid, UK secretary of state for culture, is expected to officially announce Fairhead as government’s preferred candidate to fill the slot, replacing Lord Patten, who stepped down in May on health grounds.
