The Bank came into existence on 23 December 1976, under the provisions of Section 3 of the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976 (No. 21 of 1976) with its Head Office at Mandi (H.P.). The Bank is sponsored by Punjab National Bank. The Bank is incorporated as a Scheduled Bank in Schedule - II of Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934 and is authorized to affect banking transactions as permitted under section 5(b) of Banking Regulations Act, 1949.

The word "HIMACHAL" derives its origin from two "HINDI" words 'HIM' and "Anchal', which means "IN THE LAP OF SNOW". Himachal is also known as DEV BHUMI in the ancient history and is situated in the heart of Western Himalayas.

Himachal is also known for its pilgrimage centers. Mani Mahesh, Brijeshwari Temple, Shikari Temple, Bhima Kali Sarahan, Naina Devi, Jawala Devi, Chintg Purni are prominent worshipped places. Himachal Pradesh is also known for tourism. there are some famous tourist places i. e. Manali, Shimla, Kufri, Naldehra, Jakhu, Dalhousie, Chamba etc. The areas of Himachal namely Nalagarh, Baddi, Barotiwala, Parwanoo, Kala Amb, Pounta Sahib and Una are fastly growing Industrial Centres. e is huge potential for Hydro Electric Power generation. Big power projects like Parvati, Larji, Nathpa Jhakri, Kol Dam etc. are coming up. Bhakhara Dam, Satluj Beas Link Projects are already adding to the prosperity of the country. Himachal has a proud in sending large number of persons to serve in defence forces and many of them brought laurels to the State.
