International Boxing Federation and IABF

  • The International Boxing Federation (AIBA) has reportedly terminated any official relationship with its current suspended member, the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF), for damaging the image, reputation and interest of the sport in the country.

  •  According to the official AIBA website, AIBA has not recognized any official activities and did not support the officers from IABF since the December 2012 suspension, adding that after receiving disturbing reports on the way the sport of boxing was managed in India, it has now become impossible for them to continue any association with India.

  •  Boxers and coaches will remain protected and authorized to compete at any competition at all levels under the AIBA flag. AIBA also hopes that the IOA will give its full cooperation until AIBA approves a new National Federation for the sake of the sport of boxing in India.

Bopanna: 12th in ATP rankings

  •  India's doubles tennis player RohanBopanna leaped four places to 12th in the latest ATP rankings.

  •  The Indian achieved the feat after clinching the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title with Pakistani AisamulHaqQureshi.

  •  Meanwhile, Leander Paes still remains India's highest ranked doubles player at No.10 while another veteran Mahesh Bhupathi slipped six places to No.47.

  •  In the men's singles category, SomdevDevvarman and Yuki Bhambri remained static at 78th and 146th, respectively, while SaniaMirza is No.11 in the women's doubles list.

Cycling academy launched

  •  Sports minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated the National Cycling Academy at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex and launched a project to create swimming pools at three separate stadiums in the capital.

  •  At an estimated cost of `907.50 lakhs, the project of creating swimming pools will come up at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex and Karni Singh Shooting Range.

  •  On the occasion, Singh also launched a Community Connect Scheme to include sports and recreational facilities in the JNS, IGSC and the SP Mukherjee Swimming Complex.

  •  The academy will be financed by the Union government, and the sports ministry through SAI with a long-term perspective of making it a top notch institution, which is financially independent and a self-sustaining venture.

World T20, 2014 host : Bangladesh

  • The World T20 2014 is all set to be held in Bangladesh between March 16 and April 6.

  •  According to MahbubAnam, Director, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and member of the local organising committee of the T20 World Cup, the tournament is the biggest in the nation’s history.

  •  The BCB has also planned a concert featuring A.R. Rahman, Akon, and other local artistes on March 13 at the Bangabandhu Stadium.

Vijay Hazare Trophy

  •  Karnataka annexed a historic triple crown at the Eden Gardens , as the Ranji and Irani Cup champion lifted the STAR Sports Vijay Hazare Trophy for the first time defeating Railways by four wickets in a low-scoring final.

  •  Karnataka asked Railways to take first strike and restricted the 2005-06 champion to 157 in 47.4 overs with Man-of-the-Match AbhimanyuMithun picking up four wickets for 19 runs.
     

Swiss Grand Prix Gold

  •  Producing yet another emphatic performance, Indian giant slayer P V Sindhu stunned the recently-crowned All England champion Shixian Wang to breeze into the semifinals even as it was end of road for SainaNehwal at the $125,000 Swiss Grand Prix Gold .

  •  In the men's singles, ParupalliKashyap also booked a semifinal berth with a hard-fought victory over sixth seed Tien Chen Chou of Chinese Taipei.

  • Seventh seed Sindhu played a dominating game to assert her supremacy .

  • World number 9 Sindhu showed once again why she is considered to be India's next big badminton sensation as she produced a beautifully controlled and carefully-paced game to keep Shixian at bay throughout the

quarterfinal match.
1st Asian Grand Prix Archery Championships

  •  Indian archers won two gold and one silver in team events in the ongoing 1st Asian Grand Prix Archery Championships in Bangkok.

  •  Compound women team of GagandeepKaur, V JyothiSurekha and P Lily Chanu defeated Iran in the final team event and took the first gold for the country by a good margin of 15 points (219 vs 204). They eliminated Taipei team (224 vs 220) in the semi-final and Lao (224 vs 214) in the quarter-final.

  •  Recurve men trio of JayantaTalukdar, TarundeepRai and Kapil clinched the gold by thrashing Taipei in a one-sided final (6-0) in set system.

  •  Recurve women team lost to Japan in the bronze medal match. 

BNP Paribas Open tennis semi-finals

  • India’s SaniaMirza and her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black knocked out second-seeded Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina to enter the semi-finals of the women’s doubles at the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament.

  • The pair will be playing fourth seeds Czech Lucie Hradecka and China’s JieZheng next.
    2014 Pepsi IPL venues

  • United Arab Emirates will stage the initial phase of the IPL while Bangladesh was kept on standby for some of the matches by the BCCI, ending weeks of speculation over the venues of the high-profile event which was scheduled from April 16 to June 1.

  • The initial phase of the tournament would be played out at three venues in the UAE -- Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah from April 16 to 30.

  •  Due to the lesser number of teams, the duration of the league has also been shortened this time to 47 days and 60 matches -- much less than the 76 games played last season which was spread over 54 days.

Asian Air Gun Championship

  •  Chain Singh and HeenaSidhu claimed gold medals in the seventh Asian Air Gun Championship in Kuwait City.

  •  It was a dominant fare from both as they led from start to finish in clinching the men’s air rifle and women’s air pistol gold medals.

  • World record holder HeenaSidhu topped the qualification phase as well with a score of 386, following rounds of 94, 97, 97 and 98.

  •  Chain Singh was equally impressive even though he had qualified in the seventh place with a modest score of 619.6, as against Liu Zhiguo of China, who had topped with an Asian record of 630.3.

  • Apart from the three individual gold medals, India has collected two silver and two bronze medals in team championships. The Youth Olympic quota places will be at stake over the next two days that will feature junior and youth events.

Eighth seed at India Open

  • Saina Nehwal is the only Indian to have been seeded at the $250,000 India Open Super Series to be held in Delhi from April 1-6.

  •  World No.1 Li Xuerui of China is the top seed while defending champion and world No.4 Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand has been seeded fourth.

  •  Saina’s compatriot P.V. Sindhu will take on second seed Shixian Wang of China in the opener.

  •  The other Indians in the women’s singles main draw are Tanvi Lad, Trupti Murgunde, P.C. Thulasi, Saili Rane and Arundhati Pantawane.

Chris Gayle’s 100th Test

  • Chris Gayle is set to play his 100th Test at his home ground in Jamaica when New Zealand tours the Caribbean in June.

  • The WICB has announced a three-match Test series and two Twenty20 Internationals between the two teams.

  •  West Indies will then host Bangladesh for two Tests, three ODIs and a one-off T20I.

3rd South Asian Handball championship

  •  India outsmarted Pakistan 36-31 to win the third South Asian Handball Championship at an outdoor court in Noida.

  • India, who beat Pakistan also in the league stage, shrugged off a shaky start to get the better of the reigning South Asian Games champions. Bangladesh beat Afghanistan to finish third in the five-nation competition.
     

Mahalakshmi Race Course

  • The Mahalaxmi Racecourse is a horse racing track in Mahalaxmi neighbourhood, of Mumbai. The track is oval shaped with 2,400 metres (7,900 ft) straight chute, spread over approximately 225 acres (0.91 km2; 0.352 sq mi) of open land in the heart of Mumbai city. It was created out of a marshy land known as Mahalakshmi Flats. Built in 1883 and modelled on the Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, it is spread over land facing the sea.

  •  Mahalakshmi race course, which turned 130 recently is now a listed heritage structure (grade 2 B), was not always so sought after. Racing originally started in Byculla in 1870. It was in 1883 that racing shifted to this 226-acre expanse of swamp land by the sea in Mahalakshmi.

  •  The Indian classics races — restricted to horses bred in India — were introduced in the colonial period. Princess Beautiful, a Maharaja of Baroda filly, won the Indian 1000 Guineas, the Indian 2000 Guineas and the Indian Derby.

No. 1 team in ICC T20 rankings

  • Riding on their superb unbeaten run in the World Twenty20 Championships so far, the Indian cricket team toppled Sri Lanka to clinch the top spot in the ICC rankings .

  •  India have moved ahead of Sri Lanka into the number-one position on the Reliance ICC T20I Team Rankings Table

  •  India gained seven ratings points after remaining unbeaten in their group engagements in Bangladesh to finish on 130, bringing them on par with Sri Lanka. But when ratings were calculated beyond the decimal point, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side found itself ranked higher. With both India and Sri Lanka through to the semi-finals, both have a chance to either retain or reclaim the number-one position.

DipikaPallikal’s latest world squash rankings

  •  Indian squash player DipikaPallikal has dropped a rung to 12th in the latest world rankings for women in which Malaysian squash legend Nicol David has retained the top spot.

  •  Dipika, however, remains the highest-ranked Indian in the Women's Squash Association rankings.

  •  David has maintained the top spot despite her unexpected loss in the semifinals of the World Championship held last month.
     

Indian Badminton League

  •  The second edition of the Indian Badminton League (IBL) will be held from September 30 to October 15.

  •  The governing council has decided to allow franchisees to increase the team strength from 11 in the first year to 13 players. Each franchisee can pick two more players — Indian or foreign — which will further intensify the competition.

  •  The league will be played in Six Indian cities — Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
    Malaysian Grand Prix

  •  Mercedes AMG Petronas made it two out of two so far this season, winning the 2014 Malaysian GP. This time, it’s the 2008 world champion and new PetronasPrimax technical performance consultant Lewis Hamilton taking the victory, ahead of teammate and Australian GP winnerNicoRosberg and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel.

  •  Hamilton entered the record books with the dominant win, securing his first Grand Chelem. That’s getting the pole position, the fastest lap of the race and winning the grand prix while leading every lap. Only 23 drivers have ever achieved this, and just 11 of them have more than one. Vettel, for instance, has four.
