Ramkumar Ramanathan and Vijay Sundar Prashanth wins T. K. Ramanathan award

Ramkumar Ramanathan and Vijay Sundar Prashanth won the prestigious T.K. Ramanathan award at the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association annual day function held at SDAT-Nungambakkam Stadium here on Friday. Both received Rs. 15,000 each.
While Ramkumar — with good performances on the ATP and ITF circuits — reached a world ranking of 226, Vijay’s good display in the 2015 Aircel Chennai Open — he qualified for the main draw — and two back-to-back ITF titles in Tiruchi and Chennai, improved his rankings to 397.

Neel Mukherjee wins £10,000
Encore award for the year 201

Neel Mukherjee’s story of a young man who is drawn into into extreme political activism in 1960s Calcutta, The Lives of Others, has won him the £10,000 Encore award for the year’s best second novel.
Already shortlisted for the Man Booker prize, where it missed out to Richard Flanagan’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North, and the Costa, Mukherjee’s novel “immensely impressed” judges with its “ambition and depth”, said chair of the panel Alex Clark. It beat second novels by authors including Will Wiles, Deborah Kay Davies and Amanda Coe to win the Encore, an award which was founded by Lucy Astor 25 years ago, and which has been won in the past by major names including Ali Smith, Anne Enright and Colm Tóibín.
Mukherjee, who lives in London, called the Encore “a burst of light in what is usually considered to be dark, damp, bleak territory – the dreaded second novel”, and said he was “thrilled by my good fortune and, looking at the list of past winners, both humbled and deeply honoured” to win.

Heniz Award 2015

An Indian-origin scientist at MIT Sangeeta Bharti, who has developed artificial human microlivers for drug testing, has won a prestigious $2,50,000 Heinz award for her work in tissue engineering and disease detection.
The award includes an unrestricted prize of $ 2,50,000. The Heinz Awards annually recognise individuals for their extraordinary contributions to arts and humanities; environment; human condition; public policy; and technology, the economy, and employment.
She is also using microlivers in the lab to model malaria infection and test drugs that can eradicate malaria parasites completely. She hopes to eventually develop implantable liver tissue as a complement or substitute for whole-organ transplant.

87th Academic Award

The 87th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The Academy Awards which is popularly known as Oscars were presented in twenty four categories.Below are the list of this awardee.

Rajendra Singh bags Stockholm Water Prize

    Prestigious Stockholm Water Prize 2015 has been conferred to Renowed enviornmental activist Rajandra Singh has been for his innovative water restoration efforts and courage to empower communities in Indian villages.
    Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf, Patron of the Stockholm Water Prize, will present the prize during the World Water Week on August 26. The award carries $150,000 and a specially designed sculpture.Stockholm Water Prize was constituted in the year 1991 to recognize persons for their outstanding achievements in conservation and protection of the world’s water resources and presented annually.
    Rajendra Singh is fourth Indian to win the prestigious global award, others are- Madhav Chitale in 1993, Sunita Narain in 2005 and Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak in the year 2009.

National Safety Award
(Mines) for year 2011 & 12

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has presented the National Safety Awards (Mines) for the Years 2011 and 2012 at a function organized by Ministry of Labour & Employment.For the purpose of the contest the National Safety Awards (Mines) has been divided into 7 different groups depending upon the type of mineral and nature of workings.These are - Coal mines - Belowground with difficult mining conditions; Coal mines - Belowground (others); Coal mines – Opencast; Metal Mines - Mechanised Opencast; Metal Mines – Manual Opencast; Metal Mines – Belowground and Oil Mines.
The indicators of safety performance for determining eligibility of these awards are-
• Lowest injury frequency rate (LIFR) during three consecutive years ending with the contest year.
Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India instituted National Safety Awards (Mines) in 1983 (for the contest year 1982) with a view to promote a competitive spirit amongst mine operators for the betterment of safety standards in mines and to give due recognition to outstanding safety performance at national level. This award is generally given away by the Hon’ble President of India every year and has generated considerable enthusiasm amongst the Mining community.

NCDC Cooperative excellence award 2014

Ministry of Agriculture has conferred National Cooperative Development Corporation Award for Cooperative Excellence – 2014 to the best performing primary cooperatives for their excellent performance to Utlou Weavers’ Cooperative Society Limited (UWCSL).
National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) is a statutory Corporation set up under an act of Parliament in March 1963 for developing rural economic activities through cooperatives.
The NCDC Award for Cooperative Excellence is an initiative to encourage and give due recognition to those cooperatives who despite all odds, are able to sustain and work for development and prosperity of agrarian society.
The Award is for inculcating a sense of achievement and spirit of cooperation and thus set an example for others to follow.

Shivani Agarwal and Maharaja Pandit selected for prestigious Radcliffe fellowship

Two Indians from Indian Institute of Science, and University of Delhi have been named for Harvard University’s prestigious Radcliffe fellowship.
Shivani Agarwal from Indian Institute of Science and Maharaja Pandit from University of Delhi are among 50 scholars, scientists, and artists who will begin their one-year fellowships along with 48 at the Radcliffe Institute in September 2015, a media release said.
Considered as one of the most prestigious honors for faculty, only three per cent of applicants were accepted this year.
Shivani, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation Fellow has been selected for learning to make choices in the era of big data. Mr Pandit has been selected for his project life in Himalaya.

Dr. Siva Mandjiny wins UNC’s 2015 Award for Teaching Excellence

Chemistry professor Sivanadane (Siva) Mandjiny has been named UNC Pembroke’s recipient of the UNC Board of Governors 2015 Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Annually, the Board of Governors names one professor at each of the 17 UNC campuses to receive the award. The award winners will collect a commemorative bronze medallion and a $12,500 cash prize.
The award, which serves to underscore the importance of teaching, will be presented by a member of the Board of Governors during spring graduation ceremonies on May 9. UNCP’s recipient serves as University Marshal and presides over ceremonial events during the academic year.
Florence Nightingale
Award given to 35 nurses
The President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee conferred the Florence Nightingale Awards to 35 nurses from across the country on the occasion of International Nurses Day.
The Florence Nightingale awards are given to the outstanding nursing personnel employed in Central, State/UTs. Nurses working in Government, Voluntary Organizations, Mission institutions and the private institutions can apply with the due recommendation of concerned State Government. The Florence Nightingale Awards carries Rs.50, 000/- cash, a certificate, a citation certificate and a Medal.

Charlie Hebdo awarded PEN

Freedom of Expression and courage award
The French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has received a controversial freedom of speech award at the PEN Literary Gala in New York.The decision to award the magazine the Freedom of Expression Courage Award to Charlie Hebdo caused six high-profile authors to withdraw, including The English Patient writer Michael Ondaatje. They said PEN - known for defending imprisoned writers - was stepping beyond its traditional role.
The boycott has been criticised by the author Salman Rushdie, a former president of PEN who was in hiding for years over Islamist threats in response to his novel The Satanic Verses.

Syrian journalist Mazen Darwish wins UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2015

The winner of the 2015 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize is Syrian journalist and human rights activist, Mazen Darwish, currently imprisoned. The Prize has bedd awarded during the celebration of World Press Freedom Day, 3 May, which has been be hosted this year by Latvia.
An independent international jury of media professionals recommended Mazen Darwish in recognition of the work he has carried out in Syria for more than ten years at great personal sacrifice, enduring a travel ban, harassment, as well as repeated detention and torture. Led by Ko-ko U (Myanmar), chairman of the Yangon Media Group and publisher of the Yangon Times, the International Jury stressed the need to remember Mr Darwish, currently in prison, along with so many other human rights defenders and journalists.
Darwish, a lawyer and press freedom advocate, is the president of the Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression (CMFE), founded in 2004, and one of the founders of the Voice newspaper and syriaview.net, an independent news site banned by the Syrian authorities. In 2011, Darwish established Media Club, the first Syrian magazine about media affairs. He has been detained since February 2012, when he was arrested with colleagues Hani Al-Zitani and Hussein Ghareer.
Numerous human rights and press organizations around the world have issued calls for the release of Darwish and his fellow journalists.
The $25,000 Prize is named in honour of Guillermo Cano Isaza, a Colombian journalist who was assassinated in front of the offices of his newspaper, El Espectador, in Bogotá, on 17 December 1986. It is funded by the Cano Foundation (Colombia) and the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation (Finland).

Redlnk lifetime Achievement award to Dr Prannoy

NDTV executive co-chairman Dr Prannoy Roy was conferred the Redlnk Award for lifetime Achievement at a function. The award, comprising a trophy and a citation, has been instituted by the Mumbai Press Club. The awards were presented by the Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.
Awards were also presented in the categories crime, politics, courts, health, environment and science. A panel discussion on ‘limits of dissent’ was held in which Prabhu, veteran journalist Shekhar Gupta, Jain and Krishna Prasad, editor-in-chief, Outlook, took part. The debate was moderated by Sachin Kalbag, editor of Mid-Day.

Dr. Promod Patil wins Whitley Awards 2015

The Princess Royal will today present a Whitley Award, a prestigious international nature conservation prize worth £35,000 in project funding, to Pramod Patil at a ceremony at the Royal Geographical Society, London, in honour of his work to protect the iconic great Indian bustard in the Thar Desert. Pramod is one of seven individuals to have been awarded a share of prize funding worth £245,000 by the Whitley Fund for Nature, winning the Whitley Award donated by The William Brake Charitable Trust in memory of William Brake. The great Indian bustard once flourished across the Indian sub-continent, but poaching, loss of grassland habitat and lack of community involvement has resulted in local opposition to conservation activities and pushed the species from 90% of its original range. The estimated surviving population consists of fewer than 250 individuals competing for space in the most densely human-populated desert in the world.

The winning stories did all of that and more.” The other winners in various categories are: Lesley Nneka Arimah from Nigeria for “ Light “; Jonathan Tel from the United Kingdom for “ The Human Phonograph “; Kevin Jared Hosein from Trinidad and Tobago for “ The King of Settlement 4 “), Mary Rokonadravu from Fiji for “ Famished Eels “. The regional winners will compete for the overall winner’s prize, which will be announced in London on September 8.   • Paris- based Syrian-Lebanese Arab poet Adonis has been chosen for this year’s Kumaran Asan World Prize for poetry, instituted by the Kumaran Asan Memorial Association to honour poets of international stature and introduce them to Indian readers. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh, memento and a citation.

  • Some of his important works include If Only the Sea Could Sleep, Pages of Day and Night, Songs of Mihyar the Damascene, Not A Star, A Voice, A King is Miyhar, The Adoring Rock, and Take me to God.

Susanta Lahiri
Wins Hevesy Medal Award 2015

  • Professor Susanta Lahiri, Chemical Sciences Division, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata, won the Hevesy Medal Award 2015, at the Tenth International Conference on Methods and Applications of Radio-analytical Chemistry for his outstanding contributions to heavy ion induced radioisotope production, tracer packet technique, converter targets, and green chemistry.

  • The other person to also win the award this year is Professor Kattesh V. Katti of the Cedntre for Radiological Research, University of Missouri, Columia.

  • This premier international award named after George de HEVESY, the 1943- Chemistry Nobel Laureate, is given to “an individual in recognition of excellence through outstanding, sustained career achievements in the fields of pure as well as applied nuclear and radiochemistry, in particular applications to nuclear analytical chemistry.”

UP Government to
Honours Gopal Das Neeraj

  • Uttar Pradesh government has conferred its Sahitya Shiromani Samman and a cash prize of 21 lakh Rupees upon noted Hindi poet Gopal Das Neeraj. Along with Gopal Das Neeraj, veteran Hindi litterateur Uday Pratap Singh was also conferred with Sahitya Shiromani award and cash prize of 21 lakh Rupees.

  • Indian-origin Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella has been chosen for the ‘Champions of Change’ award for bringing about change within his company to support working families. US President Barack Obama will honor this award to him. Before being named CEO in February 2014, 47-year-old Nadella held leadership roles in both enterprise and consumer businesses across the company. Joining Microsoft in 1992, he quickly became known as a leader who could span a breadth of technologies and businesses to transform some of Microsoft’s biggest product offerings.

  • Champions of Change’ award is given to those who support working families and have helped to bring about change within their companies, communities or organizations by advocating for commonsense paid sick and paid leave policies, equal pay and an end to pregnancy discrimination to support families, businesses, and economy.

Bishwaratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika International Solidarity Award 2015

  • The second Bishwaratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika International Solidarity Award 2015 was conferred on internationally acclaimed filmmaker Adoor Gopala-krishnan in a function held at Rabindra Bhawan.

  • The biennial award, instituted by the Asam Sahitya Sabha and sponsored by the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), carries a memento, a citation, an eri chador, a collection of books and a cheque of Rs 5 lakh. The first international solidarity award instituted in the memory of the cultural icon had been given to eminent research scholar and dance exponent Lubna Marium of Bangladesh.

  • Sudakshina Sarma, eminent singer and younger sister of Dr Hazarika, offered her tributes and captivated the audience with the song Paneir ponati.

  • Adoor Gopalakrishnan, a multifaceted personality, has pioneered the film society movement in Kerala. He is regarded as one of the finest filmmakers of India. As a film director, producer and script writer he had played a major role in revolutionizing Malayalam cinema. Adoor’s debut film was Swayamvaram (1972) which had pioneered the new wave of cinema movement in Kerala. For his contribution to film industry, he has won 16 National Film Awards, 17 Kerala State Film Awards and several international film awards. Adoor is also honoured with Padma Shri (1984) and the Padma Vibhushan (2006), he had won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2004.

Femina Miss India 2015

  • Delhi girl Aditi Arya was crowned fbb Femina Miss India World 2015 at a glittering ceremony at Yashraj Studios in Mumbai. Aditi will represent the country at Miss World pageant and the runners-up Afreen and Vartika will compete for various international titles.

  • Afreen Racheal Vaz was adjudged first runner-up while Vartika Singh second runner up at the grand finale of 52nd year of fbb Femina Miss India, which took place on late Saturday night.

  • Six awards named after players who represented India in the past included, the Jugraj Singh Award for Upcoming Player of the Year (Men – Under 21) awarded to Harmanpreet Singh with a cash prize of Rs 10,00,000, Asunta Lakra Award for Upcoming Player of the Year (Women – Under 21) to Namita Toppo with Rs 10,00,000. Besides a cash prize of Rs 5, 00,000, Baljit Singh Award for Goalkeeper of the Year awarded to PR Sreejesh, Pargat Singh Award for Defender of the Year to Deepika, Ajit Pal Singh Award for Midfielder of the Year given to Manpreet Singh and Dhanraj Pillay Award for Forward of the Year awarded to Akashdeep Singh for showcasing their efforts to continue upholding a healthy sports culture in the nation.

Get Dadasaheb Phalke Award

  • Veteran Film Actor and Producer Shri Shashi Kapoor has been conferred Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2014. He is the 46th Dada Saheb Phalke Award Winner. The award is conferred by the Government of India for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema.

  • The award consists of a Swarn Kamal (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakhs and a shawl. The award is given on the basis of recommendations of a Committee of eminent persons set up by the Government for this purpose.

  • Shashi Kapoor made his debut as a leading man in the 1961 film Dharmputra and went on to appear in more than 100 Hindi films. He was a very popular actor in Bollywood during the 60s, 70s and until the mid 80s.

  • Shashi Kapoor was one of India’s first actors to go international. He is known internationally for starring in many British and American films, notably Merchant Ivory Proudctions run by Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, such as The Householder (1963), Shakespeare Wallah (1965), Bombay Talkie (1970) and Heat and Dust (1982). He also starred in other British and American films such as Siddhartha (1972) and Muhafiz (1994).

  • In 1978, Shri Shashi Kapoor set up his production house Film Valas which produced critically acclaimed films such as Junoon (1978), Kalyug (1981), 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981), Vijeta (1982) and Utsav (1984).

  • In 2011, Shri Shashi Kapoor was honoured with Padma Bhushan Award by the Government of India. He is also a recipient of three National Film Awards.

ISRO names for Gandhi Peace Prize 2014

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has been selected for the Gandhi Peace Prize for 2014 for its contribution to the country’s development through space technology and satellite-based services.

  • The award, comprising Rs.one crore and a citation, was decided after the jury for the prize met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.

  • Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu, Leader of the single largest Opposition Party in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, senior Member of Parliament L.K. Advani and Gopalkrishna Gandhi are other members of the jury.

  • The Gandhi Peace Prize for social, economic and political transformation through non-violence was instituted in 1995.

Novel Family Life Wins Folio Prize 2015

  • Indian-American novelist Akhil Sharma’s novel Family Life has won the prestigious Folio Prize 2015. His novel was among the eight shortlisted books from 80 fictional works and was chosen as the best fiction novel published in the United Kingdom in 2014. Family Life is Sharma’s second novel and took him 13 years to write.

  • The Folio Prize 2015, worth £40,000, aims to recognise and celebrate the best English-language fiction from around the world, published in the UK during a given year, regardless of form, genre or the author’s country of origin. It is the first major English-language book prize open to writers from all over the world.

Bangladesh Wins
Women in Parliament Award

  • Bangladesh has won the prestigious Women in Parliaments (WIP) Global Forum Award for regional leadership in reducing gender gap in politics. Bangladesh won the award for its outstanding success in closing the gender gap in the political sphere in the regional category “South and Southeast Asia”.

  • On behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam received the award today at the Headquarters of African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a foreign ministry press said here this afternoon.

  • The World Economic Forum study reveals that Bangladesh is one of the top 10 countries in the world in reducing gender gaps and this leads the country to win the prestigious WIP Global Forum Award for “regional leadership in closing the gender gap in politics”.

  • Based on the rankings of the World Economic Forum’s “Global Gender Gap Report”, WIP Awards were presented at the WIP Summit 2015 to those countries which were recognized for their political empowerment of women, and to countries which showed regional leadership in closing the gender gap in politics.

National Kavi Pradeep Samman Award

  • Noted Hindi poet Gopaldas Neeraj has received the first National Kavi Pradeep Samman at a function held here.

  • The award has been instituted by the Madhya Pradesh government in the memory of Kavi Pradeep, the renowned poet and songwriter who is best known for his patriotic song ‘Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo’ written as a tribute to the soldiers who had died defending the country during the Sino-Indian War.

62nd National Film Awards 2014

  • The 62nd National Film Awards 2014 has been announced by the Chairpersons of the three juries on Feature Films, Non Feature Films and Best Writing on Cinema. The awards in the various categories are as follows:

  • Best Actor- Vijay for Nanu Avanalla Avalu (Kannada).

  • Best Actress- Kangana Ranaut for Queen (Hindi).

  • Best Direction-Srijit Mukherji, Director of Chotushkone (Bengali).

  • Best Film on Social Issues- Chotoder Chobi (Bengali) directed by Kaushik Ganguly.

  • Best Supporting Actor- Bobby Simhaa for film Jigarthanda (Tamil).

  • Best Supporting Actress- Baljinder Kaur for film Pagdi The Honour (Haryanavi).

  • Best Children’s Film- Kaakkaa Muttai (Tamil) and Elizabeth Ekadashi (Marathi).

  • Best Child Artist- Vignesh & Ramesh for Kaakkaa Muttai (Tamil). Special Jury Award- Bhaurao Karhade, Director of Khwada (Marathi).

  • Best Cinematography- Sudeep Chatterjee for film Chotushkone (Bengali).

  • Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director- Aditya Vikram Sengupta for Asha Jaoar Majhe (Bengali).

  • Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration – Chotoder Chobi (Bengali) directed by Kaushik Ganguly.

  • Best Writing on Cinema- Silent Cinema: (1895-1930) authored by Pasupuleti Purnachandra Rao.

Tyler Prize 2015

  • The Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement Executive Committee named the Honorable Jane Lubchenco, PhD, of Oregon State University, and Madhav Gadgil, PhD, of Goa University, as the recipients of the 2015 Tyler Prize for their leadership and engagement in the development of conservation and sustainability policies in the United States, India and internationally.

  • Since its inception in 1973 as one of the world’s first international environmental awards, the Tyler Prize has been the premier award for environmental science, environmental health and energy.

  • As the winners of the Tyler Prize, Lubchenco and Gadgil will share the $200,000 cash prize and each receive a gold medallion. The Prize, awarded by the international Tyler Prize Executive Committee with the administrative support of the University of Southern California, honors exceptional foresight and dedication in the environmental sciences and policy—qualities that mirror the prescience of the Prize’s founders, John and Alice Tyler, who established it while the environmental debate was still in its infancy. \

  • Previous laureates include Edward O. Wilson, Jane Goodall, Jared Diamond and Paul and Anne Ehrlich, M.S. Swaminathan andThomas Lovejoy.

Wisdom Cricket Almanack 2015

  • Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara has been named as the Leading Cricketer in the World in the 2015 Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack. Meanwhile Australia’s Meg Lanning has been chosen as their inaugural Leading Woman Cricketer in the World — the first time the England-based annual has bestowed such an award in 152 editions of continuous publication dating back to 1864.

  • Sangakkara joined India’s Virender Sehwag as the only two players to be named as Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World for a second occasion.

  • The 37-year-old left-handed batsman and wicketkeeper won the award after a stellar 2014 that saw Sangakkara score an all-time record 2,868 international runs in the calendar year, including a triple century. His feats, which added to an already brilliant career, included a man-of-the-match performance in Sri Lanka’s T20 WC final win over India last year.

  • Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year is an award dating back to 1889 and is generally based on a player’s performances in the preceding English season.

  • By tradition, it can only be won once in a career and the 2015 list included Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews, England rising stars Moeen Ali and Gary Ballance and two notable county players in Adam Lyth and Jeetan Patel.

Veerappa Moily selected for Saraswati Samman 2014

    Former Union law Minsiter and INC senior leader Veerappa Mioly has selected for the prestigious Saraswati Samman for 2014 for his famous Kannada poem ‘Ramayana Mahanveshanam. Saraswati Saman is given by the K K Birla Foundation since 1991 for an outstanding literary work in any Indian language mentioned in the Schedule VIII of the Constitution. The award carries a cash purse of Rs 10 lakh, a citation and a plaque.
Ramayana Mahanveshanam, which divided into five volumes, was first published in the year 2007 in Kannada. This poem has been later translated into English, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.
This poem basically speaks about the true principle of the ideal State from a secular and modern point of view.
Moily is an established writer in Kannada who has authored four novels, three collections of poetry, a number of plays and numerous essays. His novels ‘Kotta’ and ‘Tembare’ have been translated to Hindi, English and many other languages. Moily handled many ministries in the previous UPA regime including Petroleum and Natural Gas, Corporate Affairs, Power and Law. He was chief minister of Karnataka from 1992 to 1994.
The selection for the award was made by a 13-member panel of scholars and writers headed by former Chief Justice of India R C Lahoti.

    Outgoing Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba has won the world’s prestigious award Mo- Ibrahim proze for African leadership for year 2014.
Hifikepunye Pohamba has served as Namibian President two terms. For first time he was elected in 2004 and again in 2009. Now, he is due to be succeeded by elected President Hage Geingob.
    This prize is given each year to an elected leader who has governed well, raised living standards and then left office. It is named after Mo Ibrahim, a British-Sudanese mobile communications entrepreneur and philanthropist who had made billions of fortune from investing in Africa.
Mo Ibrahim had launched this prize in 2007 to encourage African leaders to leave power peacefully. It is the world’s most valuable individual award and carries monetary award of 5 million dollar and also $ 200,000 a year for life.
    The inaugural prize was awarded to Joaquim Chissano, former president of Mozambique.

    Information and Broadcasting Ministry Secretary Shri Bimal Julka has conferred the 4th National Photography Awards to eminent photographers at a function organized by the Photo Division, under the aegis of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. Below is the list of awardee.
Shri Surendra R. Patel was given the Life-Time Achievement Award, Shri Swarup Dutta was awarded the Best Professional Photographer Award and Shri R. Sasikumar was awarded Best Amateur Photographer. Awards were also conferred to 10 winners under the Special Mention category for both, the Professional and Amateur segments. The theme for the Professional Category was “Hamara Bharat Swachh Bharat” and for the Amateur Category is “Mother and Child”.
    Shri Surendra R. Patel, the winner of the Life Time Achievement Award is an eminent professional in the field of photography. He has participated in several national and international exhibitions and salons from 1951 and has 200 awards to his credit. He has been honoured with several awards and felicitations. He is credited for having presented more than 100 slideshows on Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, 1958 and pictorial photography in different parts of the country.

Stree Shakti & Nari Shakti Puraskar

President Pranab Mukherjee on the eve of International Women Day i.e,. 8th March has awarded ‘Stree Shakti Puraskar’ and ‘Nari Shakti Puraskar’ for the year 2015, to Six illustrious women.
The awardees were nominated by the state governments, MPs, VIPs as well as on suo-moto basis which were ten selected by a national level Screening Committee. Six noted women have been presented with the award on March 8, 2015. Each award carries 3 lakh rupees and citation.

Clemson University honours Ratan Tata with a Doctrate

Indian Businessman Ratan Tata has been honoured with Doctorate of Automotive Engineering by the Clemson University. He was presented with the honorary doctorate for his contribution to the global automotive industry at the South Carolina Automotive Summit this week. Ratan Tata holds bachelor’s degree in architecture from Cornell University. In 1962 he had joined the Tata Group. In 1981, he was named chairman of Tata Industries and led the group in various fields including transportation, consulting, communications, chemicals, hospitality and steel.
Ratan Tata serves as director on the boards of Alcoa Inc., Mondelez International. He is also on the international advisory boards of, JP Morgan Chase, Rolls-Royce, Mitsubishi Corp., Temasek Holdings and the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
