India's third Scorpene-class submarine, the INS Karanj, was inducted into the Indian Navy on Wednesday, following two long years of sea trials. Originally launched in 2018, the INS Karanj will significantly increase the capabilities and strength of the Indian Navy, said Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Karmabir Singh.
Marking the occasion, Shekhawat said, “We live in India and launch numerous satellites, building nuclear submarines, manufacturing vaccines for the world. The new Karanj is another example of Make in India.”
The INS Karanj is the third Scorpene-class submarine inducted into the Indian Navy under Project 75I. The first of its kind, the INS Kalvari, was commissioned in December 2017, and the second, the INS Khanderi, in September 2019.
The fourth submarine, INS Vela, hit the water in May 2019 and the fifth, INS Vagir, in November 2020. Both Vela and Vagir are currently in the process of undergoing rigorous sea trials, while the sixth and final submarine part of Project 75I, INS Vagsheer is currently at various stages of outfitting.
As part of Project 75I being undertaken at Mazagon Docks Limited in Mumbai, the INS Karanj is a conventional diesel-electric submarine with state-of-the-art attack capabilities. Its stealth features include advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low radiated noise levels and the ability to attack with both, torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles, making it one of the most feared submersibles in the world.

Tirath Singh Rawat was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand today, with just a year to the election, a day after the resignation of Trivendra Singh Rawat.
Tirath Singh Rawat, 56, is a BJP MP from the Pauri constituency in the state. He was the chief of the party in Uttarakhand in 2013-15. He was picked over prominent candidates including Union Minister Ramesh PokhriyalNishank and Uttarakhand Minister Dhan Singh Rawat.
He is a surprising, yet interesting choice for the post. Sources say the decision was taken with the express approval of Prime Minister NarendraModi. What sets him apart is that he is not identified with any faction in the Uttarakhand BJP.

The Union Cabinet has approved the PradhanMantriSwasthyaSurakshaNidhi (PMSSN) as a single non-lapsable reserve fund for share of health from the proceeds of health and education cess levied under Finance Act, 2007, an official statement said.
The salient feature of PMSSN is that it is a non-lapsable reserve fund for health in the public account and proceeds of share of health in the health and education cess will be credited into PMSSN, the statement said.
The accruals into the PMSSN will be utilised for the flagship schemes of the health ministry such as Ayushman Bharat - PradhanMantri Jan ArogyaYojana (AB-PMJAY), Ayushman Bharat - Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs), National Health Mission, PradhanMantriSwasthyaSurakshaYojana (PMSSY), Emergency and disaster preparedness and responses during health emergencies and any future programme/scheme that targets to achieve progress towards SDGs and the targets set out in the National Health Policy (NHP) 2017.
The administration and maintenance of the PMSSN are entrusted to health ministry and in any financial year, the expenditure on such schemes of the MoHFW would be initially incurred from the PMSSN and thereafter, from gross budgetary support (GBS), the statement said.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis has led to a spike in the country’s unemployment rate to 27.11% for the week ended May 3, up from the under 7% level before the start of the pandemic in mid-March, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) has said. The Mumbai-based think tank said the rate of unemployment was the highest in the urban areas, which constitute the most number of the red zones due to the coronavirus cases, at 29.22%, as against 26.69% for the rural areas.
Analysts have been warning about the spectre of unemployment ever since the country was put under a lockdown on March 25 by Prime Minister NarendraModi to arrest the spread of the coronavirus infections.
Scenes of migrants fleeing urban centres including Delhi and Mumbai only confirmed the long-held concerns on their employment as the economic activity came to a grinding halt.

Researchers at the Utah State University recently used the silk from silkworm to grow skeletal muscle cells, improving on traditional methods of cell culture and hopefully leading to better treatments for muscle atrophy.
When scientists are trying to understand the disease and test treatments, they generally grow model cells on a flat plastic surface (think petri dish). But growing cells on a two-dimensional surface has its limitations, primarily because muscle tissue is three-dimensional.
Thus, USU researchers developed a three-dimensional cell culture surface by growing cells on silk fibers that are wrapped around an acrylic chassis. The team used both native and transgenic silkworm silk, the latter produced by silkworms modified with spider silk genes.
Native silkworm silks have been used previously as three-dimensional cell culture models, but this is the first time that transgenic silkworm silk has been used for skeletal muscle modeling.

Thomas Bach was re-elected as president of the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday for a final four-year term with his immediate focus on this year’s delayed Tokyo Games.
The German lawyer was unopposed and won the vote 93-1, with four members abstaining, following an opening eight-year mandate dominated by the Russian doping scandal and the first Olympics to be postponed in peacetime.
"Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart for this overwhelming vote of confidence and trust,” Bach said during an online meeting of IOC members.
