Indian Army will participate in multinational military exercise 'ShantirOgroshena' in Bangladesh

  • Indian Army will participate in Multinational Military Exercise namely SHANTIR OGROSHENA -2021 in Bangladesh. 
  • The nine days exercise will start on the 4th of this month to commemorate the birth centenary of Bangladesh Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman and mark glorious 50 years of liberation.
  • Indian Army contingent comprising 30 personnel from the Dogra Regiment will participate in the exercise along with contingents of Bhutan, Sri Lankan and Bangladesh Armies. 
  • The theme of the exercise is Robust Peace Keeping Operations. Military observers from the USA, UK, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Singapore will also be in attendance throughout the exercise.

India's first 14-lane Delhi-Meerut Expressway

  • He 82 km phases 2 and 4 of the Delhi-Meerut expressway are set to be open for public use from today. The expressway will reduce the travel time between the two cities from two hours to around 50 minutes.
  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will not charge users till the Ministry of RoadRoad Transport and Highways approves the rates after the opening.
  • The Delhi-Meerut expressway's 14 km Akshardham-UP Gate phase 1 and 22 km Dasna-Hapur phase 3 are already operational. The 19 km phase 2 links UP Gate and Dasna, while the 32 km phase 4 links Dasna and Meerut.
  • Commuters must note the varied speed limits decided by the local authorities. Phase 1, which is in Delhi has a speed limit of 70 kmph, while it is 100 kmph in the rest of the phase, which is in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Phase 4 is an access controlled six-lane expressway, and the work on all 55 underpasses along its length has been completed. In phase 2, work on 17 out of 18 underpasses is also completed. NHAI told the media that the remaining underpass near ABES College would be opened in another week.

BIMSTEC finalises Connectivity master plan for the region

  • The virtual meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Bay of Bengal Multi Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) grouping on Thursday finalised a major Connectivity master plan for the Bay of Bengal region.
  • The seven member regional grouping namely India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Myanmar will take up the Master plan for transport connectivity for adoption in the next summit of the organisation to be hosted by Sri Lanka in a few months from now.
  • The meeting also endorsed three MoUs/agreements relating to convention on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal matters, cooperation between diplomatic and training academies and establishment of BIMSTEC Technology Transfer Facility in Colombo.
  • External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar expressed India’s commitment to take the BIMSTEC to new heights.

GST revenue collection reached a record level of Rs 1.23 lakh crore in March 2021

  • Monthly GST (Goods and Services Tax) revenue collected by the central and state governments grew to a record high of Rs 1,23,902crore in the month of March 2021, a sign that the economy is on a growth trajectory, recovering from the impact of coronavirus pandemic.  
  • March GST receipts were more than Rs 10,000 crore higher than the February 2021 collection of Rs 1.13 lakh crore, and the highest since the introduction of the indirect tax regime. Of the Rs 1.23 lakh crore revenue, CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) stood at Rs 22,973 crore, SGST (State Goods and Service Tax) was at Rs 29,329 crore.

MoRTH achieves record-breaking milestone of constructing 37 km per day of highways

  • Tremendous progress has been achieved in building of National Highways across the country in the last few years by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
  • The Ministry has achieved the record-breaking milestone of constructing 37 kilometres highways per day in year 2020-21, which is unprecedented. Minister for Road Transport & Highways and MSME, NitinGadkari last evening felicitated the officials of M/o RTH and presented the letters of appreciation.
  • The Minister said that this would not have been possible without dedication and team work of the officials and other stakeholders. He said that these achievements are unprecedented and have no parallel in any other country in the world.

Placed below, in brief, are the major achievements:

  • Over the last 7 years, length of National Highways has gone up by 50% from 91,287 km (as of April 2014) to 1,37,625 km (as on 20 March 2021);
  • Total budgetary outlay increased by 5.5 times, from INR 33,414 Cr in Financial Year 2015 to INR 1,83,101 Cr in Financial Year 2022;
  • Sanctioned amount has increased by 126% in Financial Year 2021 over Financial Year 2020 despite Covid-19 related impact. Sanctioned length in kilometers has also increased by 9% in Financial Year 2021 over Financial Year 2020.

2023 AIBA Men’s World Boxing Championship to be organized in Tashkent

  • The 2023 men’s boxing World Championships will be held in Uzbekistan capital Tashkent, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) announced on Friday. AIBA President Umar Kremlev confirmed Tashkent as the host city during a visit to Uzbekistan.
  • “I am happy to announce Uzbekistan, the country which has strong boxers and a champion’s character, to be the host of the 2023 Championships. I am confident in the high-level organisation, the huge fan’s support and spectacular fights,” said Kremlev in a statement. AIBA said a bid was presented by the Boxing Federation of Uzbekistan, which saw the organisation’s Board voting in favour of its candidature.
