Union Education Minister presents AICTE Lilavati Awards 2020

Six higher education institutions have been awarded the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Lilavati Awards 2020 on women empowerment under various sub-themes. The winners were chosen from 456 entries.
SWEAT (Sona Women Entrepreneurship and Training) from Sona College of Technology, Tamil Nadu was awarded in the ‘ Women Entrepreneurship’ sub-theme. Under the ‘Digital Literacy’, BharatiyaVidyapeeth took home the prize. Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship Development Pune won the award under the ‘Literacy’ sub-theme, while WIT Women Health Coalition from Walchand Institute of Technology, Maharashtra won the award under the ‘Women’s Health’ category. Radiant Seetha from Thiagarajar Polytechnic College won the contest in the ‘Legal Awareness’ sub-theme. Finally, Paritrana from St. Joseph’s College of Engineering, Tamil Nadu won the award for the ‘Self Defense’ sub-theme.

Philippines and US to organize "Balikatan" military exercise

“The Balikatan Exercise, since its launching in 1991, has been a treasure trove of learning opportunities for both Filipino and American soldiers and in recent years would also include our other allies here in the Indo-Pacific region,” said AFP Chief of Staff Gen. CirilitoSobejana, who declared the start of the BK36-2021 at the GHQ Canopy in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
Also present were U.S. Embassy in the Philippines Chargé d’Affaires John Law; Maj. Gen. EdgardArevalo, the Commander of the AFP Education Training and Doctrine Command and this year’s Exercise Director; Col. Stephen Ma, Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group Chief and U.S. Defense Attaché; and Col. Aaron Brunk of the U.S. III Marine Expeditionary Force, Officer in Charge for Exercise Support Group.
“The United States is proud to participate in the Balikatan Exercise, and we thank the Armed Forces of the Philippines for hosting U.S. troops in ways that maintain the health and safety of both our militaries,” said Chargé d’Affaires Law. “Joint exercises like Balikatan demonstrate our shared commitment to peace and stability and the adaptability of U.S. and Philippine forces. The United States will continue to seek ways, even during the pandemic, to strengthen our security cooperation.”
Department of National Defense Undersecretary Cesar Yano presided over the opening ceremony.
“With this year’s 36th Balikatan Exercise, we reinvigorate the friendship, partnership and alliance between the Philippines and the United States; a bilateral relationship that is founded on our shared history of espousing peace, security, and cooperation among nations,” said Undersecretary Yano.

SBI collects Rs 300 cr from zero-balance accounts for certain services in 5 years

Several banks, including State Bank of India (SBI), have been imposing excessive charges on certain services provided to poor persons having zero-balance or Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts (BSBDA), a study by the IIT-Bombay has revealed.
The study observed that the SBI's decision to levy a charge of Rs 17.70 for every debit transaction beyond four by the BSBDA account holders cannot be considered as "reasonable."
It highlighted that the imposition of service charges resulted in undue collections to the tune of over Rs 300 crore from among nearly 12 crore Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account (BSBDA) holders of SBI during the period 2015-20.
India's second-largest public sector lender Punjab National Bank, which has 3.9 crore BSBD accounts, collected Rs 9.9 crore during the same period.
"There had been systematic breach in the RBI regulations on BSBDAs by few banks, most notably by the SBI that hosts the maximum number of BSBDAs, when it charged @ Rs 17.70 for every debit transaction (even via digital means) beyond four a month.

RBI hikes balance limit in payments bank to Rs 2 lakh

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has doubled the maximum limit of funds account holders of payments bank can keep in their bank account to ₹2 lakh.
The regulator had earlier restricted the end-of-day balance in an account holder's savings account to ₹1 lakh.
"With a view to furthering the financial inclusion and to expand the ability of payments bank to cater to the growing needs of their customers, the current limit on maximum end of day balance of ₹1 lakh is being increased to ₹2 lakh per customer with immediate effect," said RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.
Most payments banks had a tie-up with a partner bank. If an individual's end-of-day balance crossed ₹1 lakh limit, payments banks transferred the excess funds into a sweep-in, sweep-out deposit with the partner bank.

After riding out a four-hour swirl of emotions to finally secure history Sunday, Hideki Matsuyama lifted his cap and gave a slight bow.
With the hopes of a nation atop his broad shoulders, Matsuyama did just enough to hold on at Augusta, Ga., becoming the first player from Japan to win a men's major tournament with a one-shot victory at the Masters.
After heading into the final round with a four-shot lead, the 29-year old picked up his first victory worldwide in four years with a 1-over-par 73 in the final round at Augusta National to finish a steady four days at 10-under 278.
