To speak about the economic environment, while Indian economy is slowly reverting to the growth track, there are strains in the form of continuing contraction in exports and the worst agricultural drought since the year 1972. On the positive side, industrial sector has healthily grown at 5.8 per cent during April-August 2009 as against 4.8 per cent during the corresponding period of the last year. There has been an upturn in the primary capital market activity and a steady revival in debt and equity capital inflows since April, 2009. The banking system also has sufficient liquidity thanks to the excellent liquidity management done by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) amidst a huge government borrowings programme. On the negative side, inflationary concerns have been mounting from the supply side and the growth in private consumption and investment demand still remains sluggish. The banking industry’s credit growth was just 10.8 per cent (y-o-y) as of October 9, 2009 as against 29.5% (y-o-y) a year ago. The Government is expecting a decline of 2.0 to 2.5 per cent in the agricultural GDP in 2009-10 due to the widespread drought conditions.
