Model Questions for IBPS PO PRELIM Exam : English Language Set-28

Directions: Read the following passage carefully to answer these questions. Certain words are printed in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.

India’s nuclear ambition had been the bone of contention for a very longtime. It was a settled belief in our country that the US began to stress the issue of signing the CTBT only in more recent round of talks when the two countries had come close to an agreement on the other issues, including the CTBT, because it is part of its somewhat browbeating style of doing business, But a moment’s reflection would show that there could be another explanation. In the aftermath of Pokhran-II when tempers had cooled, the US was predisposed to accept our Prime Minister’s repeated assertions that India intended to arm it with nuclear weapons only as a deterrent to a nuclear attack or blackmail.

1. Which of the following statements is FALSE in the context of the passage?

(A) Only because of Pokhran-Il the US had accepted Indian Prime Minister’s assertion about India’s nuclear policy.
(B) The rounds of talks were being held by at least three countries, the US being the mediator.
(C) Indian Prime Minister has assured the world that it would not initiate nuclear attack on any nation.

(1) Only A and C
(2) Only A and B
(3) Only Band C
(4) All the three
(5) None of these

2. The real intention of the US in bringing the nuclear issue to the fore is most probably

(1) to suppress India’s nuclear ambition
(2) to incur the goodwill of India’s enemy
(3) to deter India from going nuclear in a big way
(4) to use it as a negotiation tactic
(5) to underplay the other more important issues

3. The author of the passage thinks that India’s planning of nuclear rearmament is

(1) going to receive a lot of acclaim
(2) appreciated by other countries with few reservations
(3) a matter that irritated most other countries
(4) not considered a deterrent policy by the enemies
(5) None of these

4. Which of the following conclusions can be drawn from the contents of the passage?

(A) India’s possessing nuclear arsenals has frightened some countries.
(B) India is not reluctant to sign the CTBT.
(C) The US wants India to sign the CTBT.

(1) Only A and B
(2) Only B and C
(3) Only A and C
(4) All the three
(5) None of these

5. Which of the following inferences can be drawn from the content of the passage?

(1) Most of the issues discussed between India and the US have reached consensus.
(2) India will not use’ nuclear weapons in any situation.
(3) India will use nuclear weapons to blackmail the enemies.
(4) Before Pokhran-II, tempers of the other countries had not cooled down.
(5) None of these

(Bank Planner) Crack the Interview- Easy to Follow Tips

(Bank Planner) Crack the Interview- Easy to Follow Tips

The Interview is one of the  important part in  recruitment, since its where  the employer tests your personality, communication & problem solving skills.

1. Research - Visit the company‘s website & read about their history, products, achievements, services, management etc., You are sure to impress the HR if you know about their company and their working.

2. Start early - Reach the Interview spot in advance. Avoid rushing in the last minute, since it can create unwanted tension.

3. Dress Sensibly - Most organizations have a formal dress code, so stick with it. Light colored plain or checked shirts with dark pants for gents & Saree or Shirt/Pant for ladies would be a perfect costume. Keep it simple but professional

4. Be Calm - Look relaxed and stay cool while inside the interview hall. Nervousness decreases your confidence level & can make you stumble .Sit comfortably in an erect position, with hands on your lap. Avoid leaning on table or folding arms.

5. Greet the Interviewer - Most candidates forget to greet the person interviewing him/her while entering in excitement. Be polite in thanking when offered a seat to sit.

6. Use proper words - No need to show off your English knowledge by using unheard or difficult to understand words. Try using simple words and always answer questions looking into the other person‘s eyes.

7. Salary details - Don’t start a discussion on salary until asked for. It leaves a bad impression in the person‘s mind about you. The Interviewer will definitely ask your preference, so wait till then.

8. Say Thank you - Never forget to say thank you to the panel. Often, candidates are in a hurry to get out. Once the interview is over, thank the person, standup patiently & walk towards the door to leave. All these are noted in an interview.

How you behave inside an interview hall can speak volumes about your character. We hope these above tips would help in attending Interview boldly.

Common Interview Questions – How & What to Say

How to prepare for Interview ?

Perhaps, this is a regular question asked by candidates selected in written tests conducted by banks & government organizations. Interview sessions are considered tough by many, as it involves speaking out. Here are some commonly asked questions in Interview & methods to answer them.

Q. Tell /Describe about yourself ( you will be asked this 90% )

A. Don’t recite your resume. Tell about your education, experience, projects worked ,passion etc., Make sure you complete this within 2-3mins.

Q. Why should we hire you into our organization

A. This would be perfect time to tell about your strengths, achievements & assets. Compare your profile with the job role & justify that you will be a best fit for the job. Answers like ‘This is a best company’ , ‘I want a job in this field’ wont impress the interviewer.

Q. What are your strengths & weakness ?

A. Again this is also a commonly asked question to test how much you know of yourself. Make sure the Strengths you say have some relation to the job you applied.
‘I am very good in english’ can be said as ‘I have good communication skills’ .

Weakness - ‘I don’t have any weakness’ means you are not ready to talk about it. Similarly don’t say something like, ‘Im short tempered & get angry very soon’ – It gives an impression that you are not fit to work in group. Say something which does not affect the working & also describe about the steps taken to overcome that.

Q. Where do you see yourself after 5 years ?

A. This question would be asked to check how much you know about the career path.

‘After 5 years, I want to be in your seat’ wont work in any case. Think realistically, understand the growth opportunities of that job & put it across to them.

(Bank Planner) Strategy For Examination

(Bank Planner) Strategy For Examination

A) Quantitative Aptitude

The quantitative aptitude for bank exams tests the numerical abilities of the candidate. Bank quantitative aptitude questions are usually from topics in basic mathematics like averages, ratio and proportion, percentage, simple/compound interest etc. Bank numerical ability,as bank quantitative aptitude is also referred to sometimes, usually contains 40 questions in most of the bank numerical ability exams. The following points should be kept in mind while preparing for and attempting this section.

  • Don’t be afraid of mathematics- the section demands very basic mathematics which can be learnt through continuous practice and some tricks.

  • Practice is the key.

  • While preparing for this section- keep notes of the important formulae-this will help you in revising them later.

  • Read and thoroughly review the math topics that are tested.  Work on areas where you need improvement.

At the Test

  • Do all easy questions first, leaving the more time-consuming and difficult ones for later.

  • Before solving a problem, read all the answer choices.  They will all be in the format that your own solution should take

  • Eliminate those choices that simply don’t make sense.

  • Look for shortcuts.

B) Reasoning Ability

This is the reasoning ability part of the probationary officer exam which is very easy if time permits. And this should be the third section to attempt in the exam after general awareness and english ability respectively. You should be able to complete 50 reasoning questions in about 40-45 minutes with atleast 75% correct answers to be able to rank higher in the exam.

(C) General Awareness and Business GK

How to prepare for General Awareness Test Preparation for bank exams must be underway for most, as the exams for some of the big banks are to take place in the next few months. As we already mentioned about the common question paper model of major bank exams, let us now go deeper about each part. The first part in most written tests would be Test of General Awareness.

What is General Awareness ?

General Awareness test is nothing but pure General knowledge.Almost all exams – competitive exams, banking exams, placement exams have one such paper but the name could differ. It is meant to test the knowledge of the candidate, apart from the usual subjects. This test also helps to find out, how fast the candidate is,in gathering latest information around them
What type of Questions will be asked in General Awareness?

As the name suggests - General awareness, the questions would be based on the current events happening in India and across the world.Depending upon the nature of the job, emphasis will be given to a particular category.More questions can be asked on Economy,Finance and Banking technologies, incase of a bank’s General awareness test.Questions on world politics, social & cultural events can be asked in competitive exams.

How to Prepare for  General Awareness Tests?

Preparing for General awareness or General knowledge cannot be accomplished in a single day.It must be started well in advance.Read newspapers, news magazines, general knowledge books & gather information from all sources.

(Bank Planner) Tips to Answer Bank Exam Questions

(Bank Planner) Tips to Answer Bank Exam Questions

Bank exams, be it PO or  clerical aren’t that difficult  as people think. But the  problem is the vacancies & applicant’s ratio. So all you need to worry is about your preparation and not the toughness of the paper.

If you are preparing for PO exam, first thing you need to know is the pattern of the exam. A written test for a PO exam consists of 2 parts, objective part and a descriptive part . The objective part consists of four sections namely, English language test, Quantitative ability, Reasoning and General Awareness/Marketing aptitude& Computer knowledge.

The exact pattern for a specific bank can be found in the ‘acquaint yourself booklet’ which you get when you apply to an exam.

But for now I’ll discuss on how to attempt a standard bank PO exam which has 225 questions in total with 135 minutes time i.e., 2 hrs and 15 minutes.

225 questions in 135 minutes comes out to be 36 seconds per question. It may seem daunting but it’s not the end of the world, since we aren’t attempting every question. If you can attempt 175-185 questions (> 190 is excellent) with 90 percent accuracy, you’ve done a good job.

So, as soon as you are told to start answering, I would recommend starting with the General awareness/ Marketing aptitude section and there won’t be much to think or solve in it. Just see the question and mark the answer. Attempt as many questions as you can in this section (only if you’re sure of the answer) but you should be able to complete the section in 25 minutes (20 minutes would be excellent).

The next section to go for would be English and generally the first 9-10 questions in it will be that of comprehensive passage. So I would recommend leaving that part of the questions as the rest of the section is pretty Basic English which is very easy. Again you should be able to complete this section in 20-25 minutes.

So we’ve done with 2 sections in 40-50 minutes and left with another 135 questions which should be done in 85-95 minutes.

Depending upon your strength, go for either Reasoning or Quantitative Aptitude (QA) but remember to solve the easiest questions first (this will be the deciding factor). Any thing that requires serious calculation in QA or serious thinking in Reasoning should be left behind at first and come back to it if time permits at the end. For example questions on circular arrangement in Reasoning and compound interest calculations in QA could be avoided.

From the feedback given by many test takers, what I found is that the DI (Data Interpretation) part in QA will be an important part in the test which is also very easiest part. Most of the question in it could be solved without even using your pen. So work hard on DI.

Coming to the time for these 2 sections,40 questions in QA (or all that you could solve) should be completed in 30 minutes which leaves out 30-35 minutes to solve 40 questions in Reasoning. Don’t neglect the non-verbal part in Reasoning as there would be atleast 10 questions from it.
All said and done, you should have atleast 5 minutes at the last which you could either use to solve the Reading comprehension in English or the arrangement questions in Reasoning.

From the beginning of the new year, the good news continues on the economic front. Following on the heels of encouraging GDP growth figures for the second quarters, we now have happy tidings on the trade front as well. November 2002 saw the country’s exports record a healthy 16% increase compared to the corresponding period last year. With this, the growth rate in exports for the first eight months of the current fiscal now stands at a robust 16%. Of course part of the reason for this apparently encouraging performance is because of the base effect - exports actually fell 0.8% during 2001-2002. But that is only part of the reason. For the rest, recovery in global trade ‘and to give credit where it is due, concerted efforts by exporters have played no small role.

1. The percentage growth in exports during 2002-2003 was mainly due to the decreased volume of exports during 2001-2002.

2.  The efforts put in by the Indian exporters were comparatively less than their counterparts in developed countries.

3. There has been substantial increase in the extent of trade all over the world during the last financial year.

4. During 200 1-2092, the quantum of the country’s exports, was about three-fourths of that in 2002-2003.

5. There has been a consistent drop in quantum of exports during last three years.
